My photographic series, La Pietà, is a poetic response to my struggle with addiction. During "active addiction" many addicts dangerously isolate themselves in their homes. Addicts often lose grasp of reality while they are isolated and their inner worlds become confusing. Intervention or treatment is usually needed to prevent addicts from getting hurt or killed during active addiction. My illness has affected my relationships with family and friends. I am currently healthy, have received treatment, and working a program, but I do fear possible future relapses. I also feel guilt, shame, and remorse when I think of past relapses. Alcoholism is an insidious and isolating disease. I believe that addicts need to find support in order to survive. I believe creating artwork about my experience as an addict is cathartic and it also helps other addicts feel less alone.
